About Me

Katerina Portela

My name is Katerina Portela. I’m a 21-year-old bilingual recent graduate of San Diego State University, where I studied journalism with minors in English and International Studies. Currently, I’m working as an intern with the Los Angeles Times. I’m happiest when writing, whether on investigative stories to local arts, and especially on issues that impact my community.

In May of 2023, I began as Investigative News Assistant at KPBS where I analyzed data for investigative research, edited videos and audio with Adobe Audition and Premiere Pro, and created social media news content.

My interest in this field began in high school in Cypress, California, when I wrote for the school newspaper for the first time. Looking at the issues facing my school and interviewing students made me realize that journalism perfectly suited my love for writing, asking questions about the world around me, and connecting to my community.

At SDSU, I managed and edited the KCR College Radio blog and spearheaded a semesterly zine called “Dead Air” with fully student made writing, art, and photography. I also contributed to university paper The Daily Aztec on arts and news.
